Use this article if your computer, laptop, or tablet is running slowly, freezing, or restarting by itself.

First, is it just you?

If coworkers say the same system is slow too (for example the warehouse site, the billing system, or Anzio for everyone), the problem is likely on a server, not your computer. Report it to IT right away and say that several people are affected.

Quick checks

  1. Save your work and restart. Use Start, Power, Restart (not Shut down) so pending updates can finish.
  2. Close programs you are not using, including extra browser tabs.
  3. Check a wireless mouse or keyboard. If the pointer or typing lags, replace the batteries. Lag from a wireless mouse or keyboard can make a computer feel slow when it is not.
  4. If only one program is slow, see the article for that program: Outlook, Anzio, or the VPN.

Contact IT

Open a ticket if it is still slow after a restart, or right away if the computer restarts on its own or will not turn on. IT may clean up the computer or replace it. Include:

  • Your computer number, from the label on the computer (for example WC-01075).
  • When it started and whether it is getting worse.
  • What is slow: starting up, a specific program, or everything.
  • Whether it restarts by itself or shows any error.
